Laurie works as both a bedside nurse PRN and an implementation analyst at Indiana University Hospital in downtown Indianapolis. As an implementation analyst, she works closely with nurses on the unit to discuss nursing processes and evaluate the implementation of new technology to ensure that it is aiding nursing efforts. In addition, she works as an interim-based facility manager at Clarian West Hospital two days each week.
"I have to say the best thing about being a nurse is the knowledge. I learn something almost every day whether I am involved in the computer side of nursing or the patient care side. Ultimately, I would like to be a master-prepared certified Nursing Informaticist. (I don’t even know if that is a true profession yet, but that’s what I’d like to do!)"
In addition to working toward her master’s degree, Laurie’s spends most of her free time keeping up with her four boys. Even though the oldest is away at Indiana State, the other three keep her hopping with all kinds of extracurricular activities.

Have you ever thought about how many nurses take care of a patient at Clarian Health? If I sat down and thought about it, there are so many nurses working to make the patient’s stay tolerable and manageable, it boggles the mind.
Upon being admitted to the hospital, the patient is utilizing the various nursing roles and is unaware of the amount of skill, experience and education that is behind their care. Although the bedside nurse is who the patient relates to, it is those other nursing roles that support the bedside nurse.
These are the roles that come to my mind that one patient may have at his/her disposal during a complex hospital stay:
- Bedside nurse
- Charge nurse
- Unit Manager
- Director
- CNO
- CNS – various depending how many co-morbidities the pt has
- NPs - various depending how many co-morbidities the pt has
- WCON
- Ancillary nurses
- Nurses in the Information Services department
- Nurse Ethicists
I am proud to be a nurse and be part of a profession that nourishes and encourages growth.

I was visiting my niece in the hospital a few weeks ago. She was at another facility in Indy, had her own private room and received very good care. However, as I was sitting in her room and visiting, her nurse came in to check on her. (Now watch out, I am going to get on a soap box.) I truly believe that nursing is a profession. We, as nurses, have a tremendous amount of knowledge in our heads. Our patients expect us to know our stuff and to manage their care appropriately and efficiently while they are in our care. Why wouldn’t we want to dress the part of a professional? The nurse that came in and checked on my niece had on nursing scrubs. Appropriate, right? But what wasn’t appropriate was that when she bent over to read the measurement on the pleurovac, I could see her underwear and half of her bare bottom!
Now wait. I don’t consider myself a prude by any means. But I do care what people think of nurses as a whole. Think about it. How do you want to be viewed when you are at work? Think of those men and women who you consider professional. How often do you see a lawyer or physician walk into a room with their clothes wrinkled and stained? Or the shoes scruffy? Or too much skin showing with tattoos and piercings blatantly glaring at you? Think about it. Aren’t you a professional nurse with critical thinking skills tasked with the utmost care of another human being? Be proud. Demand respect. Dress the part.
